A note from the Author and Illustrator, Catherine Turnbull…
My son was in an accident which consequently left him a quadriplegic. As a family we were devastated. At the time of the accident he had an 8 year old son and a new born baby boy (and later had another baby boy). As time went on and acceptance came I noticed that his boys didn’t look on Dads disability in the same eyes as we were. He was just Dad. In fact having a dad in a wheelchair came with certain advantages, it was fun to ride on the back of the wheelchair and Dad could go awfully fast if he wanted to. After observing them play together I began to notice other children’s interactions with people with disabilities in their lives and saw it was the same. Their Aunty; sure she can’t see but look at the cool guide dog she has. And although grandma can no longer remember my name she can remember all sorts of fascinating storys from when she was a little girl. And so the story grew to one of acceptance, inclusion and love for people of all abilities. I dedicated the book to my son’s three boys because they are such an inspiration to me. I called the story Supabilities and encouraged children to look for their own Supability. We all have one.
