A Guide to NDIS Support for Quad Care Students in Queensland State Schools
If you’re a parent of a Quad Care student in a Queensland state school and want to bring in extra NDIS support during school hours, it’s entirely possible! However, it requires some steps to ensure both the school’s teaching goals and your child’s support needs are balanced.
What You Need to Know (you can read the factsheet here!)
Schools in Queensland are committed to helping students with disabilities succeed, focusing on their learning and making adjustments to support them.
If you’d like a registered NDIS provider, like Quad Care to work with your child during school hours, you’ll need to request permission, from the school in writing, as these extra supports are intended to help with daily living but are not educational services.
Services Quad Care provides include –
How the Process of Utilising NDIS Services in QLD State Schools Works
- Submit a Request: Start by submitting a written request to the school principal with information about the NDIS provider, the specific supports, and the proposed schedule.
- School Decision: The principal will review your request, considering factors like your child’s learning goals and the classroom environment. They may ask you for additional information or invite you and the NDIS provider for a meeting to discuss the arrangement.
- Access Agreement: If approved, the school, you, and the NDIS provider will create an Access Agreement. This document outlines the conditions for providing support at school, including training requirements, safety protocols, and privacy standards to ensure a smooth process.
Ensuring Safety and Compliance
All NDIS providers working with students in schools need to meet the Department of Education’s training requirements, including child protection, safety protocols, and a Blue Card (for working with children). This is to make sure that while your child receives valuable support, it’s done safely and in line with school policies.
Communication and Support Environment
The school will decide where and how the support is provided to ensure your child’s safety and focus on learning. If any scheduling changes arise, either you or the provider should let the school know. If the provider has any issues with continuing the service, they must notify you and the school promptly.
